Albemarle EMC Annual Golf Ball Drop
Fundraising activities include the Annual Jimmy’s ALS Walk, the Annual Jim “Catfish” Hunter Softball Tournament, and other events. Funds are used to support Persons Living with ALS (PALS), assist caregivers, fund the Jim “Catfish” Hunter ALS Clinic in Greenville, NC, purchase equipment for the loan closet, and fund various research projects
How Money Has Been Used
The Jim “Catfish” Hunter ALS Foundation has very generous donors – and we want you to know how your contribution has made a difference in the lives of those living with ALS. Here are just a few examples:
In 2005, $50,000 was given to the University of Virginia Health System, Center for the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases to develop drug treatment for ALS patients. Three motorized wheelchairs were also purchased for the loan closet for $45,000.
Finally, a $50,000 grant was given to research diagnostic biomarkers so patients can be diagnosed in a more efficient and timely manner.
Over the 2006 – 2009 timeframe, the Foundation supported the opening of an ALS Clinic through Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. The clinic provides cutting edge service and support to patients in our area in all across eastern NC. Prior to the opening of this clinic, patients had to travel to Duke or Wake Forest for care.
In 2010, the following items or positions were funded to assist The Jim “Catfish” Hunter ALS Clinic in Greenville, NC, totaling $79,424.

- Astra 300 Spirometer
- 4 X 7 Mat Table for exam room
- Rollators, Sliding Shower Chairs, transfer wheel chairs for Loan Closet
- Communication Evaluation Funds for PALS unable to get to Clinic or are in nursing homes
- Respiratory Demo Equipment for Clinics
- Phone VA Support Group Facilitator
- Recliner
